telehealth

About 700% more telehealth providers joined the U.S. healthcare industry between 2002 and 2016, with growth continuing to rise since then. But some telehealth organizations are finding that in-person visits will be necessary in many cases, no matter what.

That’s the word from a new 164-page report published by Trilliant Health, which focuses on trends that will impact healthcare in 2025. Read on for some of Trilliant’s insights about telehealth.

1. Telehealth Most Popular in Behavioral Health

While primary care and dermatology providers use telehealth a moderate amount, it’s behavioral health where the lion’s share of growth is taking place in the telehealth field. Since a large proportion of behavioral health involves talk therapy, it’s among the most fitting uses for telemedicine. In fact, behavioral health comprises over 70% of telehealth volume, Trilliant notes.

Some specialties, like radiology and intensive care, report lower utilization of telehealth due to the constraints of technology.

2. Surgeons Don’t Love Telemedicine

Understandably, surgeons are less enthralled with telehealth than primary care physicians are, Trilliant notes. While 25.2% of surgeons are dissatisfied with telemedicine, only 18.5% of primary care doctors say they find it problematic. Although telehealth may be helpful for postoperative follow-up visits, it’s not as useful for surgical necessities like wound care or preoperative evaluations.

3. Health System Leaders Want to Expand Telehealth

While patients and providers may accept many of the limitations of telemedicine, health system leaders remain eager to expand its use. Telehealth not only allows for broader patient access to experts, but it also helps health systems address labor shortages and requires lower overhead since staff members don’t need to check patients in or take them to examination rooms.

Up to half of health system leaders interviewed for the report believe that 37% of care can be delivered virtually.

4. It’s Not Just Younger Patients Who Prefer Telemedicine

When Trilliant evaluated which patient age groups prefer telemedicine, they found that it wasn’t just favored by younger patients. Following are the share of patients who prefer telehealth by age:

  • Age 18-27: 28.3%
  • Age 28-37: 31.6%
  • Age 38-47: 28.3%
  • Age 48-57: 34.5%
  • Age 57+: 28.6%

5. Patients Want Detailed Physical Exams

Patients noted that they had 10 main reasons for choosing in-person visits over televisions, the Trilliant study noted. Those were:

  • Detailed, complete physical examinations
  • A more accurate diagnosis
  • Better and more accurate treatment
  • More trust and confidence
  • Better prescription of medicine
  • Better communication
  • Lower chances of misdiagnosis
  • More attention from the physician
  • Faster treatment
  • Computer infrastructure not amenable to telehealth

Many patients have gotten accustomed to telemedicine and prefer its advantages, but providers should be aware that telemedicine is only one part of patient care. In-person visits may still remain the key source of patient interaction throughout 2025.

If this report demonstrates anything, it’s that telehealth visits for behavioral health visits will continue to remain popular with patients.
