Adam is nationally and internationally recognized for his achievements in building virtual care networks that increase access to care, reduce the costs of care and assure the quality of care. Dr. Darkins is a trained neurosurgeon and a former Medical Director, which gave first-hand experience with overcoming the challenges of care delivery from a traditional “bricks and mortar” office when the a patient’s condition and distance from care impacts mortality and morbidity.

A Masters in Public Health Medicine from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine gave him the background in health needs assessment, evidence-based practice and health economics to leave clinical practice and work full-time designing, building, implementing and managing virtual telehealth care programs.

Recruited by the US Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) in 1999, he and his team built the largest and most sophisticated telemedicine/telehealth programs in the world. During his leadership, over 600,000 Veteran patients were receiving care annually via VA’s national telehealth program that served all 50 states, Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands. On any given day, over 90,000 Veterans with complex chronic conditions were able to live independently by virtue of technology-assisted care coordination programs.

Since leaving the VA, Dr. Darkins has continued to help organizations across the US develop strategies for successful telehealth programs. He is also an Editorial Board Member for the Journal of Telemedicine and eHealth, and a trustee of the Swinfen Trust a charitable organization providing humanitarian assistance via telehealth to over 70 countries.
