Ortho Management

Can an orthopedic practice bill for orthotic management?

One of the most commonly asked question is, “Can I bill 97760?” If you are an orthopedic practice, you really can’t. This is because it should always be a therapy service, and it has to be under a therapy plan of care.

If your physician asks an occupational therapist to create a splint or brace or some type of custom-made orthotic for the patient, the patient would have to under the care of the therapist, and it has to be under a therapy plan of care. The patient would have to be going to physical or occupational therapy, and that is usually not done in the physician’s office. It may be part of the practice, but it is a separate department.

It could go the other way too. A therapist can suggest a recommendation, and it would go back to the physician. But again, this is therapy service and has to be done by a therapist.
