New icd-10 codes for 2024

If you’ve been feeling stifled by the lack of specificity among diagnosis codes for conditions like osteoporosis, retinopathy, Parkinson’s disease or congenital malformations, you’re in luck. CMS has released the ICD-10-CM codes for 2024, which will go into effect on Oct. 1, 2023, and they include new codes describing those conditions.

There are over 350 new diagnosis codes to learn, but we’ve prepared a few highlights so you can get a sneak peek of the ICD-10 codes for 2024.

Look for 8 New Osteoporosis Codes

You’ll find a series of eight new diagnosis codes describing osteoporosis-related fractures, as follows:

  • M80B: Osteoporosis with current pathological fracture, pelvis
    • M80.0B1: Age-related osteoporosis with current pathological fracture, right pelvis
    • M80.0B2: Age-related osteoporosis with current pathological fracture, left pelvis
    • M80.0B9: Age-related osteoporosis with current pathological fracture, unspecified pelvis
  • M80.8B: Other osteoporosis with current pathological fracture, pelvis
    • M80.8B1: Other osteoporosis with current pathological fracture, right pelvis
    • M80.8B2: Other osteoporosis with current pathological fracture, left pelvis
    • M80.8B9: Other osteoporosis with current pathological fracture, unspecified pelvis

These codes were introduced to rectify what many providers saw as an anatomic inaccuracy, according to remarks made at the September 2022 ICD-10-CM Coordination and Maintenance Committee. “Osteoporosis with pathological fracture of pelvis is currently coded as ‘osteoporosis with current pathological fracture, femur.’ This is anatomically incorrect. Codes specific to pelvis are needed to accurately identify this condition,” presenters said.

Therefore, practices that see a lot of osteoporosis patients may find these to be among the most useful new ICD-10-CM codes in years.

Sickle-Cell Retinopathy Gets Its Own Codes

Ophthalmologists and other providers who see patients with retinopathy will be glad to see that the new codes address another long-standing gap in available diagnoses with the addition of dedicated codes to describe sickle-cell retinopathy. The American Academy of Ophthalmology asked the ICD-10-CM Committee to consider adding these codes, and they’ll go into effect October 1:

  • H36.81: Nonproliferative sickle-cell retinopathy
    • H36.811: Nonproliferative sickle-cell retinopathy, right eye
    • H36.812: Nonproliferative sickle-cell retinopathy, left eye
    • H36.813: Nonproliferative sickle-cell retinopathy, bilateral
    • H36.819: Nonproliferative sickle-cell retinopathy, unspecified eye
  • H36.82: Proliferative sickle-cell retinopathy
    • H36.821: Proliferative sickle-cell retinopathy, right eye
    • H36.822: Proliferative sickle-cell retinopathy, left eye
    • H36.823: Proliferative sickle-cell retinopathy, bilateral
    • H36.829: Proliferative sickle-cell retinopathy, unspecified eye

To emphasize the point that these codes now have their own category, the 2024 ICD-10-CM manual will also add an Excludes2 note under H35.2 (Other non-diabetic proliferative retinopathy) that says “Excludes proliferative sickle-cell retinopathy (H36.82-).”

Check New Parkinson’s Codes

You’ll also find new codes that reflect specific symptoms found among patients with Parkinson’s disease:

  • G20.A: Parkinson’s disease without dyskinesia
    • G20.A1: Parkinson’s disease without dyskinesia, without mention of fluctuations
    • G20.A2: Parkinson’s disease without dyskinesia, with fluctuations
  • G20.B: Parkinson’s disease with dyskinesia
    • G20.B1: Parkinson’s disease with dyskinesia, without mention of fluctuations
    • G20.B2: Parkinson’s disease with dyskinesia, with fluctuations
  • G20.C: Parkinsonism, unspecified

The new codes will allow providers to differentiate between those Parkinson’s patients with dyskinesia and those without this symptom. In addition, the new code G20.C provides practices with more specificity when seeing patients who have Parkinsonism.
